Boardgames | "Red Luna" and "Jotnar"
This is a strange one, but I wanted to post as an archive. CSU Chico's Game Development program takes game education very seriously, and ensures all students are properly educated on the fundamentals of development. From basic digital practices like photography and Photoshop, to prototyping games in the physical world. This was one of my favorite parts of the CSU Chico CAGD program. This focus on critical thinking and real world experience is taken to the highest level, where in your final year you are working on teams of 10-15 to publish a real game, each individual with their own strict roles.
It all started here taking some really fun physical prototyping classes. We were tasked to study card games, board games, run playtests, modify existing games, and finally create some of our own games in collaborative team environments. It was surprisingly difficult and a very effective exercise to understanding the fundamentals of what games are. I am very grateful for this experience, and I feel it is one of my strengths as an artist in understanding at least the foundations in other spaces to better tailor my art to a space which requires so many different skillsets.
Here is featured some photos of two games I made in two different teams. My favorite of which, "Jotnar" was a game where two players competed to escape from a minotaur NPC. I loved this game, because we simulated an NPC's behavior in a videogame, by having the two players take turns controlling this character. This made the enemy minotaur unreliable but still intelligent. I loved these classes, and I am so glad I got the opportunity to interface with classic game design literature with my time at CSU Chico.
